The Meeting of European World Heritage Association in Segovia, 20-21 October 2016

The Associations that group the UNESCO World Heritage List sites have been meeting in Segovia, Spain, for the second Meeting of the European World Heritage Association, from October 20th to 21st. The purpose of the meeting, dedicated to the “Social Role of World Heritage” is the sharing of good practices, presented by the various associations, regarding the management of UNESCO World Heritage sites as a tool for social integration, to reflect on the role of citizens in its protection and valorisation.

Members of the network of Associations presented experiences related to this theme: participatory processes in the management of World Heritage, its ability to create social cohesion, and the ability of UNESCO sites to be places of social innovation and economic regeneration.

The following representatives of the Italian Association of World Heritages participated in the meeting:

  •  Giacomo Bassi, the mayor of San Gimignano;
  •  Carlo Francini, Scientific Coordinator of the Association, and site manager of the Historic Centre of Florence;
  •  Mariangela Busi, Official of the UNESCO Office of the Municipality of Mantua;
  • the Municipality of Barumini; and
  • the World Heritage Site of the Val d’Orcia.
