Analysis of Carrying Load in UNESCO World Heritage sites
In the balance between the need for protection and that of tourism development, UNESCO World Heritage sites have long been at the centre of animated discussions on the management of visitor flows and the obligation – by the Administrations and the managing bodies – to fall within the standards indicated by the Management Plans as required by UNESCO.
While waiting for the renewal of signatures on the Protocol of the 5 cities of art, the University of Florence has recently published a study on the carrying capacity of the Historic Centre of Florence, in collaboration with the UNESCO Office of the Municipality of Florence. The research is part of the debate on sustainable tourism development and on the impacts that tourist pressure generates in the cities of art. It also serves as a tool to reflect upon other realities of cultural heritage – more generally to UNESCO World Heritage sites.
On Friday 22 September at 10 am, the Round Table “Analysis of the Carrying Capacity in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites,” will be held at the Sala Bibliotechina of the Santa Maria alla Scala Complex of Siena. Experts and administrators, moderated by Prof. Giovanni Liberatore, Professor of Business Economics at the University of Florence, will participate in the discussion.
The meeting, organized and promoted by the Italian Association of World Heritage Sites and the University of Florence, is part of the scientific program of the World Tourism Event / Tourism Fair of UNESCO sites, in Siena from 22 to 24 September.

- Carolina Taddei – Councilor for Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of San Gimignano
Dr. Giovanni Liberatore, Professor of Business Economics at the Department of Economics and Business Sciences of the University of Florence, will act as the moderator.
